McAfee Rogue System Detection Sensor (by McAfee, Inc.) is a lightweight network sensor designed to find unmanaged or unauthorized devices on your network and report them to McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO). It helps security and IT teams close visibility gaps by continuously discovering endpoints that lack the McAfee Agent or required security controls. The sensor uses a combination of passive listening to common network broadcasts and safe, targeted probes to identify devices and characterize them for follow-up action. Findings are sent to ePO, where administrators can trigger alerts, tag systems, generate reports, and automate remediation such as deploying the McAfee Agent and applying security policies.

Key capabilities:

  • Continuous discovery of unmanaged endpoints across local subnets
  • Tight integration with ePO for alerting, tagging, reporting, and automated agent deployment
  • Low-overhead operation using passive detection with targeted active checks
  • Customizable trust rules to suppress known or approved devices and reduce false positives
  • Supports audits and compliance efforts by validating coverage and identifying gaps

Typical use cases include onboarding new assets, identifying shadow IT, verifying security coverage after network changes or mergers, and maintaining an accurate inventory of systems connected to the environment.
